In July, Aperion Care Oak Lawn had the privilege of celebrating one of our very own residents: Miss Ruth Marshall, a 98-year-old U.S. Army veteran, and one of only two
surviving members of the legendary 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion.
Known as the “Six Triple Eight,” this all-Black, all-female battalion made history during World War II by clearing an overwhelming backlog of mail for American troops overseas. Their work played a critical role in boosting morale and helped reconnect soldiers with their families during a time of great uncertainty. Miss Ruth’s role in this groundbreaking unit represents a powerful piece of American history, and she is a living reminder of strength, service and purpose.
In a moving two-hour ceremony, Miss Ruth received five military medals, including the Congressional Gold Medal—the highest civilian honor awarded by Congress and the largest and heaviest medal of its kind. Friends, family and fellow veterans joined the event, along with Senator Tammy Duckworth and her team, as well as Ron Nunziato from the Health Care Council of Illinois.
Although Miss Ruth now communicates using pen and paper due to hearing loss, her vibrant personality shines through. She is sharp, witty and as spirited as ever, continuing to inspire everyone around her.
The world continues to learn about Miss Ruth through articles, videos and most recently The Six Triple Eight on Netflix. We’re fortunate to know her not just as a hero, but as a special member of our Aperion Care Oak Lawn family.
